4-H Club Information

4-H Community Clubs:  Members meet as a group on a regular schedule under the guidance of adult volunteers.  the members plan their own programs, elect officers, take part in community service activities, and engage in a variety of 4-H project work.  The major factor, common among members, is usually a geographical location.

4-H Project Clubs:  Similar in operation to the Community 4-H Clubs, except that members are all enrolled in the same project or a limited range of related projects.

4-H School Enrichment:  These are Extension- coordinated learning activities planned in cooperation with public and private schools and after-school sites.  These program supplement the on-going school curriculum.

4-H After-School:  This is an enrichment program for existing after-school sites.  Youth do fun, hands-on activities while learning life skills in the areas of nutrition/fitness, plants and money.  A volunteer or after-school staff member is trained to work with a small group of youth, ages 8-12, once a week.  The election of two officers within the group provides leadership opportunities as well.
What Do 4-H Members Do?
Take Part in 4-H Events & Activities:  The activities available to all categories of 4-H members include summer camps, camp counseling, fairs, contests, judging team competitive events, public speaking, project workshops, classes, and many more.  There are also district, state, national, and international events and activities.

Learn Life-Skills Through Club Involvement:  Club members yearly achieve in a project area.  Achievement involves developing subject-matter knowledge and teaching others through an oral, written and visual presentation.  Public speaking, record keeping, written and workmanship skills are developed through this process.  All 4-Hers are recognized for their efforts.  Interpersonal communication skills are developed as youth attend the regularly scheduled 4-H club meetings.  They have fun with other 4-Hers as they plan and carry out the activities they want to do.

Learn Leadership Skills:  Youth may be elected to serve as an officer of their club.  Other leadership opportunities available to all categories of members include serving on committees, serving as committee or activity chairpersons, being a county 4-H officer, camp counselor, district 4-H officer, participating in the Leadership Training Series, attending State Leadership Conference, State 4-H Legislature, or National Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington, D.C., and more.
Where Does the 4-H Club Meet?
Actually, there are close to 30 4-H clubs in Pasco county. Each individual club decides where and when they will meet. Four-H clubs meet in club members' homes, church fellowship halls, libraries, barns, and parks.  While some clubs meet at the same location for most meetings, others rotate or change depending on the planned activities.
Why Isn't There a Club Closer to Me?
Four-H clubs are organized and run by adult volunteer leaders.  Leaders usually set up meetings in their communities, close to their homes.  If there is not a club meeting close to you, it may simply be because no one in your area has stepped forward to become a volunteer and start a 4-H club.  If you are interested in learning about becoming a 4-H volunteer leader, please call the 4-H office.  Four-H volunteers receive training and support from the 4-H staff as well as the many benefits derived from being a Pasco county volunteer.
Do You Have to Raise Animals?
No. Many people think that 4-H is still only about raising crops and animals.  In fact, 4-H today offers a variety of project areas, trips, and experiences that have nothing to do with animals.  Animal projects are offered to those who wish to work with animals.  Pasco County has several horse clubs, one swine club and one goat club.  Many of the 4-Hers who choose animal projects work with companion animals, such as cats, dogs, birds and rabbits.
What Other Projects Are Available?
There are approximately 250 different project books offered in 50 different project categories.  Along with the animal projects mentioned above, some of the other categories offered are public speaking, electricity, computers, small engines, clothing construction, marine science, forestry, food preparation and nutrition, wildlife, horticulture, and workforce preparation.  Since all 4-H clubs are active in community service, many  4-H members work with leadership and citizenship projects.  There are project books appropriate for ages 5 through 18 and adaptable for all learning levels.  Just about any interest a child may have can be explored in a 4-H project book.
