LEADER MEETING

&mi= ddot;      = ;   We will have a leaders meeting on Tuesday October 2, 20= 07 at 6:30 in Clayton Hall, Pa= sco County Fairgrounds= . This is a good chance for you to bring in any outstanding enrollments and registration fees. As always if you would like to pick up any resource boo= ks or other information at this meeting, please let us know and we will be glad = to have it ready for you.

CLUB OFFICER TRAINING

&mi= ddot;      = ;   We will have a club officer training on Tuesday October= 9, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Woman’s Building. Depending on the different ages o= f the youth we will split up the group and teach them accordingly. Please RSVP a= s we will order pizza and have drinks for the youth. Any adults willing to help, please let Jean Hink know prior to the meeting. jmhink@ufl.edu

·      = ; The first materials for National 4-H Week 2007 are now available at www.4-HBrandNetwork.org. Bookmarks, print= ads and posters showcasing 4-H’s great work in science, engineering and technology (4-H SET) programs are downloadable for you to begin planning f= or National 4-H Week – October 7-13, 2007. Many more materials are comi= ng soon including a brochure, certificates, placemats, Web banners and other = event materials.

Also, beginning in September, even more resources will be added to help you promote 4-H SET e= vents being held during National 4-H Week. And did you know = that the 4-H Brand Network also has a variety of other promotional materials including the new 4-H Volunteer Recruitment kit? It also has tips and how-to’s to promote 4-H most effectively in your community.

·      = ; Participate= in the 4-H Club Exchange Database - Showing off your favorite places to visitors can be as fun as visiting new places yourself. Thanks to the 4-H Exchange program, youth clubs from Arkansas to Washington have enjoyed the best of both worlds.

If your club woul= d like to experience another part of the country or to share your home state with= a visiting club, the 4-H Exchange database makes it easy to get started. Sim= ply submit your free exchange ad online, highlighting the "best of" = your state and listing what parts of the country you'd like visit, as well as y= our preferred travel and/or host dates.

GRANTS

&mi= ddot;      = ;   Community Pride Proposals are due in the State 4-H Even= ts Office on October 15, 2007. Community Pride is a grant process for 4-H Clu= bs to fund community service projects within their community. Proje= cts proposals will be reviewed by a committee to determine the amount of funding each project will receive (typically no more than $1,000 per project). Those groups receiving funding must complete the Community = Pride Report and will then be eligible for recognition at the Community Pride Luncheon at Flori= da 4-H Congress. A note on Diversity from Germaine A. Pointer, = 4-H RSA, South District

Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “Men hate each other because they fear= each other, and they fear each other because they don’t know each other, = and they don’t know each other because they are often separated from each other.”     As we find ourselves living in a more diverse world, we are discovering that = we are not as separated as we once were.&nbs= p; Our world has gone global, whether we like it or not. All of our neighbors, no longer l= ook or acts just like us. This can = be viewed as a challenge, or a wonderful opportunity t o = learn new and exciting things about the cultures around us.

According to the 2000 Census, the Hispanic population doubled in several south centr= al counties in Florida. The Asian population also doubled= in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco= , Hernando and Citrus counties. Hillsborough is home to more than 21,000 people who listed their race as Asian, accordi= ng to a St Petersburg Times article. What does all= of this mean for us?

The Florida 4-H pro= gram has made a commitment to being proactive in the presentation of Multicultural education.   Dr. Lisa Guion along with county faculty taught many workshop= s on the subject as well as provided agents with tools necessary to aid in the education of 4-H volunteers and members.&= nbsp; As we begin the implementation of a new 4-H year, let us be deliber= ate in our planning and include some diversity in our programming.   For those of us who have no= t yet started the process, let’s begin with some small steps. Here are a few suggestions:

&middo= t;      = ;   Start by publishing a li= st of Ethnic Observances in your newsletter

&middo= t;      = ;   Agents, volunteers or me= mbers can attend and set up displays at culturally diverse events in your commun= ity

&middo= t;      = ;   Be culturally sensitive = in marketing local materials

&middo= t;      = ;   Invite community members= of different cultures to teach arts or crafts at a day camp=

&middo= t;      = ;   Serve dishes from other cultures a= t 4-H events

&middo= t;      = ;   Have a college student or volunteer translate a one page flyer with 4-H information, into Spanish, C= reole etc.

&middo= t;      = ;   Set aside a space on your office bulletin board to celebrate cultural holidays

&middo= t;      = ;   Place an ad in culturally diverse media outlets

For those who are already implementing all o= f the above suggestions, please share with me what you are doing successfully in= your county, so we can share ideas with each other.   Per our 4-H vision, “= Florida 4-H asp= ires to be the leading youth development program that creates positive change in y= outh, families, and communities.” This includes all families, which means we now have to actively engage the other cultures around us. We will all benefit. I look forward to the celebration= .
